proposed new words: warsilent, warsilence

Tearerism?

Goodbye, Bush is gone celebrations

       The Power of Language

Barack Hussein Obama A Bridge to Islam             Reagan: Tear down the war, Tear down this wall.
The Internet is the new medium to invent useful important words and concepts. These pages explore that effort and how powerful controversial words and phrases move the world.   A majority of Americans now question our government's invasion of Iraq. The events of 9/11 and Bush's 'War on Terror' has caused many to believe that Islam is a barbaric and anti-Judeo-Christian religion. But also, many believe that the Bush administration has not done enough to counter the 'we' versus 'them' psyche in which all Muslims are assumed linked to evil. In reality, the vast majority of Muslims have confronted the menace of extremism within Islam throughout much of its history. Its the Western focus on violent means to problem solution that should examined and how it provokes an Islamic extremist violent response by a small minority of the religion. George Bush and the 'neocons' have been the greatest 'organizer' of Islamic extremists that has ever been. Period.

In the darkness of this confusion, the words 'terror, terrorist and terrorism' have been so corrupted and manipulated that they should be abandoned. They are too generalized and do not separate out violent extremist elements of Islam. (All regions and nations of the world have their version of the Ku Klux Klan).

And they are too easily attached to anyone opposing the neo-Conservative agenda. They should be intellectually TORN down. And the word 'War' has greatly contributed to this corruption and manipulation. Again the neo-Conservative agenda calls for violent solutions and has been referred to as the War Without End. It also should be non-violently TORN down. As patriotic Americans we have a right to question our government's use of the English language to involve us in violent actions that millions now believe we were tricked into agreeing to, such as the invasion of Iraq. We have every right to question the use of the phrase 'war on terror'.  Let's hijack Ronald Reagan's famous line: "Mr. Gorbachev ... Tear Down This Wall" and say "Tear Down This War"... Anti-war efforts can also include the skillful use of language to move its cause.   We can invent, change or otherwise define the words we need to promote peace. That is what this website is about; thus the new word 'Tearerist'. Its just another example of creativity to form the word Tearerist and make it a word that promotes peace. The urgency to do this outweighs any unfamiliarity with the concept. Thus 'Tearerism.com'.

Initially, an idea was developed to capitalize on the same pronunciation of the words tearer and terror. Adding the suffix ist to the word tearer makes the imaginary word tearerist, which is again pronounced exactly the same as terrorist. Again, the internet allows for the adaptation of new words such as tearerist, all that is needed is to explain what that new word means.   This new word tearerist has a softer less violent meaning than the word terrorist. Its obvious root is the the word 'tear' and a tearer is someone who tears. Dictionary.com has a listing for this word. It is not completely devoid of violent meaning, which makes it a somewhat difficult process to connect the word to the promotion of peace. The combination of the words tear into, tear up, tear down, tear across, tear through all can be attached to either violent or non-violent words. You can make the point:  Let's TEAR down the belief that violence and war solves any kind of problem.    Or you can make the point that we should TEAR across racial and ethnic lines to promote the sustainable treatment of of the earth and all of it's inhabitants.    Let's TEAR through barriers to transparency in government and business.   Ronald Reagan's most famous words "Mr. Gorbachev, TEAR Down That Wall" were incredibly symbolic and inherently non-violent.   So, we can make the point: Let's intellectually TEAR down the idea of a 'war on terror' and instead use non-violent terms and means to solve world problems.

So next we assume that someone who non-violently tears down the idea of a 'war on terror' is a 'tearerist and is spreading 'tearerism'. This becomes another example of the creation of new words, and now strengthened by the power of the internet, it could be used to dilute the idea of 'war on terror'. If enough people believed that that was the meaning of the word it would become more and more effective in countering the 'war on terror' idea, and thus promote peaceful solutions. Whatever the outcome of this effort, NewsFollowUp.com has introduced the idea and has made it available on a world-wide basis on the internet. Search engines will be able to find the word because it now has been invented and given the power of an internet address.

  • Sidney Morning Herald, Australian chief lashes US on Iraq Email Print Normal font Large font Tom Allard in Baghdad July 23, 2007 and SMH

Latest related coverage Near miss for general as celebrations turn deadly Slideshow: Base justice Advertisement Advertisement AUSTRALIA'S Chief of Army, Lieutenant General Peter Leahy, has taken a swipe at the US military's strategy at the outset of the Iraq war, expressing disbelief that it has taken so long for commanders to realise the merits of engaging with the local population and winning their trust.

Visiting a counter-insurgency centre for excellence at Taji, just outside Baghdad, General Leahy was briefed by a US Army colonel, Manuel Diemer, on the new US strategy of schooling all unit commanders in the importance of developing a deep understanding of the culture of the communities in which they are conducting operations.

Colonel Diemer said the strategy meant combat units were now living among the population, doing more foot patrols, talking and interacting with the population well before they undertook any offensive operations.  This contrasts with the previous US practice of sending in forces with overwhelming firepower into trouble spots and then returning home to the relative comforts and security of a military base after blasting their way out of, or into, trouble.

The tactics have created huge resentment among ordinary Iraqis and helped fuel the insurgency. General Leahy expressed his strong support for the new strategy, but with an important, and thrice repeated, caveat. "I can't believe you guys weren't doing this two or three years ago," he said. Colonel Diemer concurred.  As he has travelled around the Middle East, General Leahy has emphasised to his troops how the nature of warfare has progressed from the Cold War principles of conventional warfare.

Rather than pitched battles between large militaries, soldiers were now working within and for communities.  "It's about protecting, supporting and persuading … and paving the way for reconstruction," he said.  Among soldiers anxious to be at the sharp end of a conflict such a message was not always warmly received, he said.  "Some of them think I'm a mongrel because I won't let them shoot the shit out of them [the insurgents]," he told Colonel Diemer.  In the two southern Iraqi provinces where Australians have been operating, they have achieved considerable success in developing links with tribal leaders and consulting widely before they undertake operations or reconstruction projects.

In Iraqi society, tribal affiliations are paramount, often trumping any loyalty to nation and even religious sect.  For Australian units patrolling in Iraq's south, a meeting with each village leader is essential.  Their efforts to reach out are usually met with traditional Iraqi hospitality, the slaughter of a goat and a long feast for the soldiers.  The only drawback, said the Australian commander in Iraq, Brigadier Gerard Fogarty, were the resulting bouts of diarrhoea many soldiers suffered.

Four Australians have been working with Colonel Diemer at the counter-insurgency centre since its inception eight months ago, a reflection that such policies have been an integral part of the Australian Army's doctrine for years, certainly well before the East Timor intervention in 1999.

  • To Democrats, Report Proves War in Iraq Is Misguided Washington Post

By MICHAEL COOPER Published: July 19, 2007 The leading Democratic presidential candidates yesterday seized on a newly released intelligence report that found the United States was losing ground on several fronts in the fight against Al Qaeda, saying it bolstered their arguments that the war in Iraq had been a costly distraction from broader efforts to keep the nation safe.

The report, a declassified summary of the central findings of the July 2007 National Intelligence Estimate on terrorism, found that Al Qaeda had "protected or regenerated key elements of its homeland attack capability."

Senator Barack Obama, Democrat of Illinois, who has opposed the war in Iraq from the start, said the report showed that the nation's antiterrorism priorities were wrong.

"It is deeply troubling that nearly six years after 9/11, Al Qaeda maintains a safe haven, an intact leadership and the capability to plan further attacks," Mr. Obama said in a statement. "It is time to act to correct those mistakes, and the first step is to get out of Iraq, because you can't win a war when you're on the wrong battlefield."

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Democrat of New York, invoked the report as she spoke about Iraq in a speech on the Senate floor shortly after 4 a.m. during a rare all-night session.

"Our involvement in Iraq continues to erode our position," said Mrs. Clinton, who voted to authorize the war but is now calling for troops to be withdrawn. "It has damaged our alliances, and it has limited our ability to respond to real threats."

John Edwards, a former Democratic senator from North Carolina, said the report's findings bore out the point he had made often on the campaign trail - that President Bush's "global war on terror doctrine is more of a bumper sticker than a strategy to eliminate terrorism."

The report noted that counterterrorism efforts "have constrained the ability of Al Qaeda to attack the U.S. homeland again." But it also noted that Al Qaeda had found a safe haven in tribal areas of Pakistan, and that it had enhanced its abilities to attack the United States through ties to other terrorist groups that did not exist before Sept. 11, 2001, including Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia.

The Republicans candidates had relatively little to say about the report.

In an interview in Sioux City, Iowa, Rudolph W. Giuliani said both Democrats and Republicans could use it to bolster their cases.

"This would be a great test in literary interpretation," Mr. Giuliani said. "I can interpret one way or the other depending on whether you are a Republican that is in favor of having the surge work or you're a Democrat in favor of the surge not working."

The campaign of Senator John McCain of Arizona declined comment, though during the overnight debate on the Senate floor Mr. McCain restated his support for continuing the war with heightened troop levels.

Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, responded to the report with a statement that did not include the word "Iraq," calling for "effective homeland security, better intelligence and a global effort against jihadists which includes military strength and the combined efforts of civilized nations to support moderate Islamic people and nations to help them defeat growing extremism."

Even among the Democratic candidates, the report exposed lingering disagreements about whether the United States is safer than it was before the Sept. 11 attacks.

The Clinton campaign said Mrs. Clinton thought it was, , but several of her opponents disagreed.

Mr. Obama said the report showed that "after almost six years, awesome sacrifices by our brave men and women in uniform, and hundreds of billions of dollars spent, we are no safer than we were on 9/11."

Mr. Edwards said, "Six years after 9/11, bin Laden is still alive, Al Qaeda is more powerful now than ever before, and we have fewer allies."

Mrs. Clinton's press secretary, Philippe Reines, said: "Senator Clinton believes that through the significant investments in aviation and homeland security, the passage of intelligence reform, and the enactment of some of the 9/11 commission recommendations, our homeland security has improved. But she will be the first to tell you that we have a lot more to do around the world before we are truly safe."

"War on Terror" has backfired
Guardian  "The US "war on terror" has backfired, strengthening extremists in Afghanistan and Somalia and turning them into legitimate political actors in the eyes of their local populations, a thinktank said today.  The Senlis Council, which has strongly criticised US policy in Afghanistan in the past, is particularly scathing of the Bush administration's "abject policy failures" in Somalia.  It said air strikes, support for Ethiopian troops that attacked Somalia last year and the ill-timed designation of a radical Islamist group, al-Shabab, as a terrorist group had been successfully exploited by the insurgency to boost recruitment.  "The lack of strategic acumen present in the 'war on terror' in Somalia and Afghanistan is in fact enabling the spread of the insurgencies present throughout both countries," said Norine MacDonald QC, the council president.

"The US is the common denominator in both countries – instead of containing the extremist elements in Somalia and Afghanistan, US policies have facilitated the expansion of territory that al-Shabab and the Taliban have psychological control over." Aid groups say Somalia, wracked by anarchy and violence for decades, is suffering its worst humanitarian crisis since 1993. Militias linked to the former Islamic Courts authority, which controlled Mogadishu in the latter half of 2006, are waging a guerrilla war against the occupying Ethiopian troops and the weak central government. With a small African Union peacekeeping force reduced to the role of bystander, several thousand civilians have been killed in the crossfire since early 2007. The UN, which considers a wider peacekeeping mission too dangerous, says 700,000 people fled Mogadishu last year. A 10-mile stretch of road outside the city now hosts more than 200,000 people, humanitarian groups say - perhaps the biggest concentration of displaced people anywhere in the world. According to Phillippe Lazzarini, the UN head of humanitarian affairs for Somalia, 2.5 million people are in need of food or other aid.

Against this grim backdrop, the Senlis Council, in its 79-page report, directly accused the US of undermining reconciliation efforts by backing the hardline president, Abdullahi Yusuf, instead of the more moderate prime minister, Nur Hassan Hussein. According to the security thinktank, the US government in February disrupted negotiations with opposition parties - including hardline Islamists - by exerting pressure on the prime minister to exclude certain groups and individuals from a reconciliation process, particularly those on a US list of designated terror suspects.  The council urged Bush to end all bombing operations in Somalia, back a phased withdrawal of Ethiopian troops who are shoring up Yusuf, and create a UN stabilisation force to neutralise the power of Yusuf's transitional federal government.

"President Bush has the perfect opportunity to adorn the twilight of his final term in office with a success story in his self-proclaimed war on terror – a fast track 'surge for peace' to end the current Somali crisis," the council said.  Yusuf personally heard calls to lead a reconciliation effort during a visit to the US. Norm Coleman, a rightwing Republican senator, yesterday urged the Somali leader to reach out to "all stakeholders not associated with terrorism".  "The president said he took my words very seriously, and would maintain his commitment to reconciliation," said Coleman, who represents Minnesota, a northern state where more than 10,000 Somalis have settled.  Last month, the Bush administration granted Somalis living in the US under temporary protected status an extra 18 months as conditions in Somalia remained "dire".

As for Afghanistan, the Senlis Council said the resurgent Taliban provided a bleak example of how the US-led war on terror had failed there as well.  It said: "The Taliban and al-Shabab are successfully exploiting policy mistakes such as aerial bombings, ongoing poverty, and aggressive foreign military presence to the extent that they are increasingly viewed by local populations as representatives of their legitimate political grievances."
